Recognizing the tremendous popularity of the historic limestone stairs at Swallow Cliff-North, the Forest Preserves of Cook County partnered with Path Construction to design and build a new set of stairs that would meet growing public demand while respecting the natural landscape of this iconic site.
Initially built in 1930 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the original 125-step staircase ascends a 100-foot bluff and has become a regional destination for fitness enthusiasts. Path Construction was proud to construct the new adjacent stairway, adding 168 stone steps and completing a full fitness circuit that blends seamlessly into the terrain. The new stairs feature consistent step height, integrated landings every ten steps for safe rest points, and improved flow for simultaneous ascents and descents.
This project was designed with durability and accessibility in mind, utilizing natural materials and construction techniques that preserve the site’s historic character while enhancing its utility for modern use. Since opening, the stairs have drawn thousands of visitors each week, from elite athletes to casual hikers, all benefiting from a unique, scenic outdoor workout space in one of Cook County’s most beloved preserves.
