Harold Washington Library

Harold Washington Library

Project Summary

This 25,000 SF renovation transformed the Harold Washington Children’s Library into a modern, engaging space for young learners. The project involved extensive demolition of existing flooring, millwork, columns, and partitions, as well as the removal of lay lights to floor level with a new structural infill. Renovations delivered a new lobby and entry, information center, self-checkout kiosks, a nursing room, a family restroom, and dedicated programming areas for children ages 0–5, 6–10, and 11–13. A staff work area was also constructed to support library operations.

The project required careful execution of structural modifications and upgrades to mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and security systems, all while meeting the design needs of the library and its users. Completed on schedule, the library now offers an expanded resource that supports the development of Chicago families and their children.
